Concerto for Bassoon and String Orchestra,
Connor Chee

Written by Diné (Navajo) classical pianist and composer, Connor Chee, the Concerto for Bassoon and String Orchestra was commissioned by Yakama bassoonist Dr. Jacqueline Wilson, who will perform the work with SFCO.

España,
Emmanuel Chabrier

Emmanuel Chabrier’s romantic interpretation of Spanish music, España, was inspired by his tour of Spain in 1882. With its rhythmic dances and voluptuous melodies, the work was widely acclaimed.  De Falla did not think any Spanish composer had succeeded in achieving so genuine a version of the jota, and Gustav Mahler declared it to be "the start of modern music" to musicians of the New York Philharmonic.

Symphony No. 5,
Dmitri Shostakovich

Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5, a work of profound emotional depth and musical ingenuity, was composed in 1937 under the strict artistic constraints of Stalin’s Soviet regime.  Shostakovich incorporates elements of modernism, dissonance, sarcasm and defiance into his musical language, masterfully evoking the power of the human spirit to transcend oppression.
