Mozart's clarinet sings, Respighi's Rome blazes. An afternoon that starts in perfect calm and ends with the biggest sound the orchestra makes all season.
Clarinet Concerto in A major, K. 622
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
featuring Daniel Schwab, clarinet
Mozart wrote this in the final months of his life, for the great clarinetist Anton Stadler. It sounds effortless, which is exactly what's hard about it — long singing lines with nowhere to hide. The slow movement may be the most peaceful music Mozart ever wrote; you may recognize it from Out of Africa.
Pines of Rome
Ottorino Respighi
Respighi's postcard of Rome: children playing among the pines, a chant rising from the catacombs, a nightingale at midnight, and then dawn on the Appian Way as an ancient army marches straight at the audience. The march builds and builds; by the final chord you'll feel it in the floor.
