The Music of Transformation

Wagner: Prelude and Liebestod (Love-death) from Tristan und Isolde

Strauss: Death and Transfiguration

Wagner and Strauss are both composers who make use of short, evocative melodic themes, or “leitmotifs,” to represent important elements of the stories they’re telling in their music, whether it’s a fateful glance, a love-potion, or something more: endless longing, the wracking pain of illness, or even the transcendence of this earthly life. For these composers, as the stories and situations evolve, so do the themes. Oliver Prezant’s commentary and musical illustrations by the orchestra will take you inside the music, followed by complete performances of two iconic pieces by these storied composers: the Prelude and Liebestod (Love-death) from Tristan and Isolde by Richard Wagner, and Death and Transfiguration by Richard Strauss.
